How does axle ratio determine your towing capability?

The axle ratio is the term used to describe the relationship between the number of revolutions per minute of the drive shaft and the revolution number that the rear axle turns. Under normal conditions, the lower the ratio number, the greater the towing capacity. If the drive shaft turns three times in one minute and the axle completes one revolution, then the ratio is 3.00.

The proven fact about axle ratio is that low ratio numbers translate to better fuel efficiency while a high ratio numbers produce more power. Power is needed to tow a trailer. The more power, the greater the towing capacity of your vehicle. Look to this ratio if you plan to tow at intervals with nothing in tow during long intervals. The ratio you choose affects future performance in many ways.

Come in and meet with our staff at Monroeville Chrysler Jeep for an explanation of your axle ratio.
